Jane's Story
It all started 4 years ago when I was 60 pounds overweight and facing medication for high cholesterol. After seeing my father's retirement consist of bypass surgery, tons of medications and a very poor quality of life from a health perspective, I decided I needed to make changes in my life. I was hoping to reduce my cholesterol with diet and lost the 60 pounds over a year's time. Although it improved it still was not where I wanted it to be so I had to incorporate exercise. After trying many different exercise programs and not really connecting with them I decided to on a 5k. I started my training in December 2007 for a run in late March. I completed the run and when I was through felt like I could run another. I believe they call it a runner's high. Well I was hooked. I went home immediately and found a 10k to run. I completed that in June and did not quite have the energy to run another right away like I did with the 5k. With my running my cholesterol has been reduced to remarkable levels.
I turn 50 in January 2009 and wanted to achieve something that I have never done before so I decided to run a half marathon. I wanted to go out of state to run this and found the Red Rock Canyon half marathon in Las Vegas on March 7th so I signed up. My sister decided to join me and she too has gotten the runners bug and is currently training. I mentioned this to Randy [Jerry's father] and he suggested that I run for some kind of charity. Knowing how important family is to him and that this cancer that Jerry is stricken with is so rare, I decided to raise money for this cause.
